Illusions: Flash Fiction by Candice Coates

They were still following behind. Good. Just a few more miles and all of this would be over soon.

She gripped the steering wheel with her lambskin gloves and resisted the urge to gun the gas. Patience, she told her self. She could hold out a little while longer. It also wouldn’t make sense to lose control of the car just because…

She blew out another strained breath and peered out her side mirror.  Guilt niggled at her insides. It had been doing so since that entire time and nothing she did could drawn out it sound, not even the radio.

She’d long since turned that off. It wasn’t helping. If anything it was making her anxiety worse and the edge to be on the other side of this stretch of road sharper than an executioner’s blade.

She eased on the gas as the destination grew larger and the car behind her pulled closer to her bumper.

Almost with a battle cry, she thrust her hand beneath her car seat and pulled it out again, thrusting it out the window.

“Here!” She didn’t mean to shout. Neither did she mean to splash milk that smelt like it had spent far too much time in the blazing heat of the car at her brother-in-law.

“Daddy!” Her nephew, Felix, giggled at his father making his aunt’s mouth fall open. It was as if the child was the real-life Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde the way he switched from wailing fog horn to angelic being descended from the heavens.

Illusions, they were all illusions.

At least she had played the part of the dotting aunt for a spell, another illusion. The smile on her sister’s face mirrored by that of her brother-in-law were true, however. And that is what made the illusions all worth it.

THE END

*A strange twist to my tale. The story of the flustered aunt won over that of the potential assassin. Such is life. These are my results for MONDAY’S MUSE WRITING PROMPT MARCH 5th, 2018.

Monday’s Muse Writing Prompt: February 26th 2018

How Writing is much like Farming: Words to Creatives #Amwriting #writinglife #writingtip #writing

Writing Farming.png

“To have a great idea, have a lot of them.” ~Thomas A. Edison

I was going through some quotes by Mr. Thomas A. Edison when I came across the one and thought of you, my fellow creatives. I thought about how down in our spirits we as aspiring authors and artist can get over our novels and creations when they seem to not be going the way we’d hoped and imagined, and for that reason, I  wanted to encourage you.

Let’s face it, as beautiful and exhilarating it is to write a book from start to finish–or to create any form of art–it is still a lot of hard work.

We as the creators often see how grand it is in its fledgling form because we see more than our words initially show in the first round of writing.

To see this way is great but we have to keep the truth in mind that our readers can’t see everything we see within our first expressions of our ideas.

They need a bit more showing and telling to gain the excitement we have about the piece and that doesn’t usually come with our first drafts or even with the first novel we set out to write.

Some people say not to be married to your first draft. Well, I would say not to make a deep commitment until draft 2 and not to get married until maybe draft 4 or 5.

Each draft is its own idea. Some are better than others. Some will take our novels and spin them into completely different concepts than we first began with.

But what began as a clutter of thoughts and ideas ends with something spectacular if we stick to it.

The key is to never give up, to remember that practice does indeed make perfect or it gets us pretty close to perfect. So keep sticking to your craft and your drafts and know that eventually, once polished enough, your gift will make room for you (Proverbs 18:16).

It is a joy to write, it is a privilege to be creative, but it is also hard work. We have to commit to the truth and adage that “for every ounce of gold we are going to have to move a ton of dirt.”

Like farming, you are going to sow a lot of seeds, some are going to produce great harvests while others are going to fall by the wayside. Still, farming is a good idea if you want to eat, right?

It’s the same way pressing through the dark patches of your craft is a good idea. Eventually, the light will come and you will enjoy the fruits of your labor.

What your stories are meant to be, what your art is meant to be, they will become…in time…if you don’t give up.

“Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.” ~Thomas A. Edison

  • Follow the link at the end of the Chapter Teaser back to the Voting Polls  and cast your vote for which story YOU think should be indie Published first

BOOK NUMBER 1

NEXUS GATE 4037: THE ANIMAL

nexus-gate-4037-the-animal-coverBook Flap: Most important rules of time surveillance; never disrupt your host timeline and never step into the future. Decorated Surveillance Specialist Vivian Leona of 6037 has broken both. Losing her husband, John Joseph Spruce, in the Nexus of time past, Vivian mistakenly pulls the wrong man into the future, a man recorded by history as having died on that very day in 1837. The consequences for keeping him alive in the future could prove far worse than Vivian bargains for, especially in the American South’s New Golden Age, 4037, where any overt emotion or cause of such, like racism, is seen as a deadly contingent—‘conditions’ cured only by euthanasia. Slave foreman and bounty hunter ‘Tucker’ John Josephus Spruce of 1837 is called ‘The Animal’ by those he hunts, and a ‘necessary evil’ by those who enlist his skills, but are his ‘talents’ enough to keep him alive when he steps into a deadly snare set twenty-two hundred years in the future where he is now pawn and prey? Will Tucker John’s instincts lead him towards retribution for his abduction, or will they make Vivian his only ally while setting him on an unexpected hunt for the one not only out for his blood, but the very woman’s he’s purposed to destroy?

3 THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT THIS NOVEL

  1. The concept for this story, like many that I have come up with, was born from a dream that I had nearly fifteen years ago.
  2. This story is Book 1 of a series. There are 3 stand-alone books that follow the lives of the characters you will meet in The Animal, with 2 additional Books that act as spin-offs.
  3. The follow-up novels within the series are inspired by free-flow writing as well as the results of writing prompts that I did, here, on i came for the soup.

BOOK NUMBER 2

WARDEN:

warden-coverBook Flap: Ever since the bizarre death of her grandmother, Maeve Grandie has made it her sole purpose to be reliable, even if that means living a dreadfully predictable life. The only sense of adventure Maeve experiences is in her dreams. The only problem is her peculiar hereditary condition that gives her rashes on her hands and arms, turning the veins of her arms a screaming azurite blue, not only gives her weird dreams but causes her to sleepwalk as well. But what would happen if those dreams that carry her into a bizarre land where people can cause their arms to ignite with blue flames and tear open the sky with their bare hands is not really a dream at all? What if the dream world, Maeve finds herself suddenly trapped in, is actually a true world of wonder but one she is somehow destroying just by being there? Senior Warden Vincent Jasper of Trident finds himself facing that very real and immeasurable danger when a young woman in the ugly pink nightgown interferes with an arrest right before disappearing through an Unzoned Door in the Universe causing the very threads of the Cluster and Realms to ripple and stretch, putting it and the lives of all who live within it in grave danger. Not only is the woman unknown but she keeps opening Doors and is somehow hiding right underneath his nose. Can Jasper and his team along with the rest of Trident, apprehend this villainous threat clad in garish pink flannel and ruffles? Or will they find out that she is not the threat at all but the weapon of someone else, all before their side of the universe collapses?

3 THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT THIS NOVEL

  1. This novel is my very first, as well as, successful attempt at a summer session of NaNoWriMo, reaching over 56k words within 30 days, and being completed as a first draft in 96 glorious days!
  2. Every woman who has Beta-Read the second draft has had a crush on Senior Warden Vincent Jasper…Myself included.
  3. This story is also part of a series of 3 stand-alone books and a spin-off series that is currently in being crafted in note form.

Chapter 34: Ascension Graveyard by Candice Coates

Ascension Graveyard..jpg 2

Chapter 34

This was just great! Not only did Etta hate having to drive a manual transmission, but it was also raining out, which meant Kyle was going to be late to work and she was going to have to do a mad dash to get the store opened. It didn’t help at all that she was still fired up over Jørn. He had managed to completely avoid her that morning, slipping out for work during the few short hours of rest she had managed to take hold of.

Frustrated, she allowed herself a good fifteen-minute cry in the car before she made her way into the mall, shoving on a pair of large sunglasses that covered up most of her bruised face. She only lifted them up when she saw that the shop was already opened for business with Mr. Albert standing behind the counter drinking a cup of coffee.

“Well good morning to you too, Etta.” The sarcasm in his greeting was only overshadowed by the dip and pull of his ridiculous eyebrows.

Etta pushed her sunglasses over her head and studied the currents of light around him. The white streaks that had broken through the gray had multiplied, weaving their way around him, slowly overtaking the darkness. “What are you doing here?”

“I own this place. Clearly, you’ve forgotten.”

She shook her head. “I didn’t forget. You just told me that you weren’t coming in for a while, just yesterday actually. What gives?” She set her bag on the counter. “Did your master make you have a change of heart?”
