3 Curious Ways to Build Character: Wisdom from the Writer’s Journal #writingtips #amwriting

When you build a character, you are really fueled by curiosity not answers. ~Andre Dubus III I believe Andre Dubus III put the art of building characters in perfect perspective. We as writers are indeed driven by curiosity. It is our ‘watching’ of the world, and those around us, that constructs who our characters are and ultimately become. Even in our minds, we watch them, the characters who live in our imaginations. When we allow the stories in our heads to tell themselves with an organic voice, we become witnesses, and thus stenographers if you will. We find our characters behaving naturally in their environments, shocking us with the choices they make, the thoughts they have, the people they connect with, their mannerisms. Curiously, we keep our eyes on them, jotting down every detail. We watch. We build. It becomes like a game of Jeopardy. We have the answers to who and why. The story that we write around these ‘answers’ is where the questions come from. The stories themselves are actually the questions. HERE …

Writing Guidelines…What you do with what you learn

One of the wisest things a writer can do to better their craft and navigate the path to their desired literary success is to realize that they, in fact, don’t know everything but have room to learn just about anything. One of the best things we can do to better gain wisdom is to learn from those who have gained the success that mirrors or resembles that which we are aiming for. A few years back my eldest sister created a creative writing workshop book while she was on sabbatical from teaching at the University level. I had the privilege of being her guinea pig for the project, using the workbook from start to finish. Out of the many writing exercises that she cleverly produced, the one that I enjoyed and affected me the most had to do with gleaning wisdom from the authors that I most read and/or admired. I was tasked with: Making a list of 4 of my favorite authors Find a quote of theirs that spoke about their writing process (and from …

But it’s Awesome: A Quote

It’s not all easy , but I think it’s all awesome.” ~Kris Langham I am pretty certain if anyone sat down and told a caterpillar the work that it was going to take not only for it to transform into a butterfly but just being able to break free of the future environment that will keep them safe but will soon be the very thing that holds them back, that they would rethink the whole metamorphosis thing. But then…maybe not.  I think the guaranteed results of flying would be too much to resist. (There is a greater spiritual component here and I’m going to have to share it later I another post in the future.) Transformation takes transition. Being able to fly is a right that comes from gaining power and strength from the struggle found in transition. If a caterpillar never struggled to break free of its cocoon, the place that once was its protection while in transition, it would never have the strength to take to the skies. There are dreams and greatness in each …

Without Laughter: A Quote

The most wasted of all days is the one without laughter. ~E.E Cummings Laughter, like food, is the one other universal language that every person on this planet not only enjoys but needs to survive. Laughter is the music that is never out of tune. It is the one song that we all can sing, and find ourselves singing along  with even if we can’t explain why. Laughter is a gift, a precious gift given to us from Yeshua Jesus and one that we can give to others. It is a fire that burns nothing but calories! And who doesn’t like that? Laughter is priceless. Be sure to treasure it and share it with those around you. No day or heart is complete without it. ~Dream. Imagine. Believe. Do. CONQUER!

See The Dream: A Quote

If the dream is inside you, it only means you were meant to bring it to reality. ~Candice Coates Our dreams are like eggs. Having one is the easy part. Giving it life is an entirely different story. Just like with an egg, you can either leave your dream idle, and nothing comes from it, or you can nurture it until it transforms into the glory that you always ENVISIONED it would be. Dreams, like eggs, take time to hatch. But in the end, time is all it takes.

Is It Really That Complicated?: A Quote Day 3 of 3 Day Quote Challenge

Don’t make change too complicated, just begin.”  And this is exactly what I intend to do, begin. For a long while now I have had this feeling that change was coming; change in my personal life, change in my future, change in my writing and art, and of course, change with my blog. When I began this journey, I started it with the intention of harnessing and fanning the flame of the creative light that had reawakened in me in November of 2013. I believe that I have done that, so much so that it has become a raging fire. The thing is, now that the embers are greatly ablaze my purpose seems to have changed. What I needed in the beginning for this blog, (blogging daily, creating random sketches, free writes and musings) is not necessarily what I need now. Now I need to be more focused. I need a strategy to bring about my desired success. For over a year I have been going on about finishing Ascension Graveyard. I have hinted to my …

Inevitable Change: A Quote Day 2 of 3 Day Quote Challenge

Change is inevitable, Growth is optional.”~Unknown (to me) Change. The only time that most people search out change and willingly run with it is when unsavory circumstances have begun to dim the light and joy form their life and they are desperate to get it back. Otherwise, change is seen as the unwelcome guest who showed up at your perfectly numbered dinner party, uninvited. Change requires sacrifice, which generally goes hand and hand with discomfort and for some of us, discombobulation. But change is necessary. It is going to happen whether we like it or not, whether we are prepared or not. Think about an infant in their mother’s womb. Change comes and is without a doubt a straining shock to everything within the infant and around them. But what awaits them at the end of their travailing journey is something far greater. Consider the caterpillar who crawls through life, knowing in the core of their being that they are meant for greater heights. They must burn with the urge to fly at some point. But …

Little, Yet Fierce: A Quote 3 Quotes Challenge!

Though she be but little, she is fierce.” ~William Shakespeare Hello all! I have been nominated by Marje of Kyrosmagica blog to participate in the “3 Days, 3 Quotes Challenge.” First, I would like to thank her for this opportunity as I am given to the love of quotes, and always happy to share them. So why this quote? Although I am not a reader of Shakespeare, and could not tell you from which play this quote comes, or of who or what he was referring, I still find such magic and an evocation of power in the words. “…if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” Matthew 17:20 The first thing that came to mind (apart from my self 😉 ) was the thought of a mustard seed and how Yeshua Jesus references its size to all other seeds, but draws attention to the power, glory and possibility that lies within …
