Me Too: A Short Story

She couldn’t stop laughing, not after the words that had just arbitrarily slipped from her mouth, and especially not with him laughing as well.

It was an unfortunate nervous tick of hers–incessant laughter. She’d had it since she was a child. When she was nervous, she laughed. Scared. She laughed. Angry. She laughed. She even laughed when she as sad. Her round of giggles at her grandmother’s funeral had her ushered out of the wake and into the parking lot.

Sure, she laughed like most people, when most people laughed, but when she was undeniably embarrassed, she laughed non-stop with horrifying honks and snorts. She didn’t know if he was laughing with her, for nervous sake, or if her mortifying animal sounds were causing him to laugh at her.

But what if he was laughing out of pity, laughing because of what she’d said? The thought made her choke and pressed tears from her eyes. They tumbled down her cheeks into the chlorinated water between them. She pressed her eyes closed, too afraid to look at him anymore, even as red embarrassment crept up her neck and face.

She heard his laughter die, felt it really, and with the loss of its timber, she felt her stomach fall even more. As best she could, she suppressed the giggling that tickled her throat and covered her face with her hands. More tears pressed against the backs of her lids and for mercy’s sake, she prayed her palms would keep them hidden.

Her breath caught when she felt his fingers gently pulling against hers. She nearly fainted when she felt his lips claim hers with a sweetness that rivaled honey.

The tingle of his breath swirling in her ear caused her laughter to cease altogether and a smile to shape her lips.

“Me too,” he’d whispered. “I love you too.”

Certainly Absolutely: Flash Fiction

This wasn’t like the last time he’d kissed her. This time, something about the play of his lips against hers had changed. The gentle ebb and flow between give and take made her toes curl in her ballet flats.

She placed her hands on his shoulders to keep herself balanced, lest she melt like a puddle of wax at his feet. The heady scent of his cologne and his masculinity mixed and mingled only to intoxicate her senses further.

Oh, but how this moment awakened her and frightened her with the same power.

The last time, the first time he’d kissed her, it was little more than a peck on the lips, accidental really. This time he’d slowly snaked his hands around her waist, gazed into her eyes with a mixture of confidence and uncertainty before pulling her into his embrace with his wordless question heard only by her lips.

Certainly. Absolutely. The words whispered without sound. She would love him…because she already did.

Like Sunshine

The taste of his lips made her think of sunshine, the way it gently warmed her evoking a smile. The pleasure if it was new, his kiss, she’d never been kissed before, and yet this felt right.

He was right.

The wait for this moment, the diligent guarding of her heart had led her to feel like a lone soldier keeping vigil over the sacred, and this was sacred, the melodic play of his lips with hers.

The sense of blooming in her soul, called forth by such intimate waters, was meant to flourish into a garden where more life would grow. And it would grow with sweetness and hope.

And it all began with a precious kiss.

Like Licorice: Micro Fiction #Monday’sMuse #AmWriting #Romance

He kissed her. Her mouth tasted like licorice, the cherry kind. It was far more tolerable than the black. The kiss was beyond tolerable.

That was the part that scared him the most.

Trying to pause the moment, he held on to her fingers and refused to let them go. It wasn’t as if she were trying to free herself. That would have made an already delicious and yet seemingly awkward moment far worse.

She was like a sister to him! They hadn’t quite grown up together being separated by a mere four years. But they had spent a lot of time together since he was friends with her older sister.

He blew out a breath and thanked the Lord he’d never dated either of them. Jules was still in the sister-friend zone, but Laney . . .

He loosened his grip on her fingers but still kept her in lingering touch. He studied her face, watched as her dark lashes fanned across the curves of her upper cheeks.

He wondered what she was thinking. He wished he could read her mind.

He wanted to kiss her again. He smiled when she looked him in the eye and kissed him the second time.

Warmth in Winter: Micro Fiction

The heat of his hands upon the small of her back warmed through her dress sending a delighted shiver through her middle.

His warmth, the perfect contrast to the chilly winter day.

Her arms, that had once been wrapped around his neck in a slow dance now rested lazily, expectantly, just beneath his collar, hypnotized by the steady acceleration of his beating heart.

With bright eyes, glistening from the strings of white twinkle lights that shone round them, he looked upon her face, studied her lips until his lids slid to half mast.

And then with the gentle, and slow move of his finger beneath her chin, he coaxed her lips into a kiss with a heat that told that summer would come again.

On a Wing & a Prayer: Flash Fiction

Had things gotten so bad that she was actually considering kissing a frog?

Yes, they absolutely had and there was no turning back now. She’d already considered all of her options…which proved to be slim to none and yet time was definitely running out.

Desperate times had called for such desperate measures that she had even gone as far as to perch herself right on the slimy nose of a frog ready to plant her very first kiss.

By the look in his bulbous eyes, he was probably thinking she was nothing more than dinner. She had to make this quick.

The reality was, she was enjoying her sabbatical. Life as a flighty winged creature was far easier than being who she really was; scullery maid number 339. She didn’t even have a name.

Well, she had a name, Aldover Gilacutty…Aldover, that was how it ended up being pronounced later on. Really what she was named was ‘All over’ because that is what her father said when she was born, “Dear Lord, my life is all over!

Why? Because she had been born the eleventh girl to a lowly cobbler who needed a strong strapping son to take up the family business, not another girl to wear his work before he made a single cent from sales.

Life could be cruel sometimes.

Short on his tax payment, her father sold Aldover  to the palace where she became scullery maid 339. Basically, she was a drab shadow that no one ever noticed. It stood to reason no one noticed her. Her father had sold her without a second thought, and her sisters had forgotten who she was.

Aldover simply wanted more out of life, even if life as an insect would be shorter than that of a human, thus she kind of stole a potion and turned herself into a butterfly…really she was more of a fancy moth compared to other butterflies but she was enjoying her new life.

But with all potions, there was that darned time limit and hers was drawing to a head. Good thing she’d learned to read fine print. It was common knowledge that a kiss could transform you back into a human, but that was when another human offered you, the morphed creature, a smooch.

Aldover figured if she kissed another creator as the morphed being then perhaps she would stay the same while they became human in her place. Dancing on the frogs nose, it was now or never, test her hypothesis or end it all by becoming a quick snack.

Tipping her nose down and letting out a breath she planted a kiss that she hoped and prayed would change everything.

TO BE CONTINUED…

* I hope you enjoyed the start of this. I know I did. There is nothing quite as satisfying than writing an easy story that makes your heart smile. And, yes, I will be writing more. I can’t leave Aldover hanging on a wing and a prayer. These are my results for MONDAY’S MUSE JULY 25th 2016. The Kindling Spark: A Poem & Musing Moment

couple-407150_640

The Kindling Spark: A Poem

The look on his face

The taste of his lips

Was nothing short of sublime

The honey-sweet savor encompassed my soul

The instant his lips touched mine

The first of that moment

The kindling spark

Birthed fire within our dance

The flavor of passion

In an innocent kiss

Spoke whispers of Romance

*Kiss– If my memory serves me correctly the Hebrew word, ‘Nashaq’ used for ‘kiss’ also means ‘to kindle or ignite.’  In Syriac, ‘to smell.’ An Arabic translation for the word means, ‘to fasten together.’ (See Bibleub.com)

Basically “To kiss is to kindle or ignite with the scent of fastening together”. (On what it means to “fasten together,” I’m going to encourage you to use your blessed imagination.)

In short, WOW!

Adhering to this truth, one that is not widely shared among  the young in love or even those who are seasoned, I am only made to view the act of kissing as something far more sacred and special than our modern world has made it out to be.

Where some may question that at my age I have yet to ‘kindle or ignite with the scent of fastening together,’ I am made to rejoice!

The Song of Solomon warns young maidens not to awaken love before it’s ready. To kiss too soon would be to do just that.

This moment of musing sprung forth from the above poem that seemingly at random birthed itself within my imagination. But I will with the same purpose that caused me to write it encourage all of us to be careful with our kisses.

This is not to say NOT to kiss your loved one. But to encourage you to view the act as sacred, special, treasured. Treat your kisses with sacred respect just as you should treat the one with whom you believe yourself to be in love.

Simply put, don’t cause smoke or fires where you have no harth or desire in which to contain them.
