Into Rich Fulfillment: The Journey of Change

“…We went through fire and through water; But You brought us out to rich fulfillment.” ~PSALM 66:12b

Trials are something that the Lord in His grace and tender mercies toward us, His beloved children, assured us we would all endure. He tells us this truth many times over in His Word, not only to assure as that we will face the process, but to encourage us that we will make it through each and every one of them and that if we hold on to Him in faith, we will come out into richness.

But why the trials? Let’s be honest, none of us looks forward to struggle or resistance. The very thought of doing so goes against our human nature. But there is beauty and benefit within the struggle.

Just like when one decides to pursue a healthier lifestyle, that transition is often a struggle, to say the least. Changing one’s diet, making a point to walk more, to take the stairs instead of the elevator, to go to the gym and actually lift enough weight to make our muscles tear in order to grow is a challenge.

But it takes the tearing, the stretching, the cutting back and yet actively doing more in order to see change. And when we see the change, when those pants slip on and zip without resistance, when taking the stairs does not leave us winded, when playing with the kids is something we look forward to, that is when we embrace the richness that came as a result of the struggle that enabled us to get there.

Trials in life, which are more often than not connected to the growth and development of our spirit, can feel like a test of fire, like we are drowning and can’t seem to get our heads above water. But the glory is in knowing that when we go through it with Christ as our anchor we will come out victorious, and not only this, but better!

In the first sentence of Isaiah 63:9, the Lord says to us, “In all their affliction He was afflicted,“. What this means is that even though the Lord has allowed the pressure to be placed upon us, understands the affliction and strain, that He has chosen to experience it along with us.

The verse goes on to say, “And the Angel of His Presence saved them; In His love and in His pity He redeemed them; And He bore them and carried them All the days of old.” Here this scripture is specifically speaking about the Children of Israel and their desert wandering but the truth still applies to us.

In our affliction, He is with us. He will deliver us. He is carrying us.

“The refining pot is for silver and the furnace for gold, But the Lord tests the hearts.” ~PROVERBS 17:3

The Psalmist tells us that we go through the fire and through the water before we are brought out into rich fulfillment. For those of us redeemed by the Lord, here are a few things to keep in mind as we go through on our way to rich fulfillment:

  • FIRE: Fire is used to refine and to purify. Silver is refined by fire in a crucible to remove the dross. Silver in the scriptures represents redemption. Gold is often used to refer to one’s faith being tested to prove true.

The Lord lovingly allows us to go through fiery testings because we are redeemed and to remove the residue of the old man from our being and character. The heat of that fire only proves to strengthen our trust in Him if we allow it.

The testing and triumph that comes from it is a mark of maturity. Our maturing enables us to receive His manifest promises in our lives. It is not a means of earning but a method to ready us to be able to withstand the weight of the glory that He has for us and the responsibility that He is entrusting to us in all that He has promised.

The last thing the Lord wants is for us to receive something good that was too heavy for us and we are crushed under its weight.

“Now I say, That the heir, as long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all; But is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father.” ~GALATIANS 4:1-2

Our trials are like tutors that ready us for what is to come!

  • WATER: Going through the water is to be born again. It is to be transcended into newness of life.

To be baptized, one must be willing. We have to take the step in faith to be submerged under the cleansing and renewing flow of the waters. When we trust the Lord in our trials and allow Him to walk with us through the fire and water, we are made new, we are matured, we are ready for the weight of the next anointing!

What have you been walking through? What fire has been licking your neck? What waters have you submerged? I urge you to press into Christ, submit to the method He has allowed to redeem, refine, and baptize you for your next.

I promise you the rich fulfillment that is on the other side of it is well worth the growth!

“You, who have shown me great and severe troubles, Shall revive me again,
And bring me up again from the depths of the earth. You shall increase my greatness,
And comfort me on every side. Also with the lute I will praise You—
And Your faithfulness, O my God! To You I will sing with the harp,
O Holy One of Israel. My lips shall greatly rejoice when I sing to You,
And my soul, which You have redeemed. My tongue also shall talk of Your righteousness all the day long; For they are confounded, For they are brought to shame Who seek my hurt.” ~PSALM 71:20-24
