I personally cannot think of anything that is more humbling and heartwarming than these words “I AM a Friend that is closer than any brother.” That is exactly what I heard as I waited for the LORD to bless me with a word to share.
Before we go any further, I would like you to take a moment a read a short blog entry I wrote around 2007:
“Here is something just for us all to think about…all of us have relationships with others, be it family, friends or romantic…but there is a simple thing that I came to realize about relationships no matter what the nature; Relationships are like house plants, they keep our air clean and they cast a certain beauty to a place where beauty was lacking. House plants require things in order to flourish. They need proper sunlight and water…among other things but these two things are very necessary.
“I AM a Friend that is closer than any brother.” Thus says the LORD
In a relationship, you are either going to be the sunlight or the water. If the plant gets too much sunlight it will dry out and die. If it gets too much water it will drown and well…die. One person can’t keep giving the relationship its needed sunlight and there be no water…too much sun will burn you and blind your eyes. Too much water will turn you into a prune and leave you in a not so pleasant mood, or worse, drown you. The point is, in all relationships, there must be reciprocation, there has to be a balance of give and take…If I give the light make sure you bring the water.
Let’s all evaluate our relationships and do our best to keep our ‘house plants’ flourishing… let’s not let the beauty fade from our lives for that would be an unfortunate tragedy and an unpleasant welcoming to loneliness.”
When I wrote that note thirteen years ago, I was focusing on my earthly relationships with others. I felt as if I was giving them all that I had and was not receiving the same type of effort from my ‘friends’ end.
I am sure we have all been in that place or are in this place now. Even recently I began to feel the same way. To say the least, I pushed these feelings aside and sought Christ Jesus for a Word. Before He told me what it would be, He informed me that it would be short but exactly what I needed to hear and exactly what others needed to hear.
“I AM a Friend that is closer than any brother.”
I was in praise and worship when He finally spoke those words to me. I immediately cried. It was exactly what I needed to hear!
Proverbs 18: 24 says, “A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” Or “There are “friends” who destroy each other, but a real friend sticks closer than a brother.” And from the Complete Jewish Bible, “Some ‘friends’ pretend to be friends, but a true friend sticks closer than a brother.”
In John 15: 12-17 Jesus says, “This is my command: that you keep on loving each other just as I have loved you. No one has greater love than a person who lays down his life for his friends. You are my friend, if you do what I command you. I no longer call you slaves, because a slave doesn’t know what his master is about; but I have called you friends, because everything I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. You did not choose me, I chose you; and I have commissioned you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last; so that whatever you ask from the Father in My Name He may give you. This is what I command you: keep loving each other!”
Even in our weakness, our insecurities, our failures, and our doubts. Christ Jesus calls us friends. Even when we fail Him, He calls us friends. When everyone else in the world lets our hopes down and does not see our worth, He does and He calls us friend.
No matter who it is that has walked out of our lives this year or years past or who may leave us someday in the near future, we have this great assurance, from His Word and from His very lips, “I AM a Friend that is closer than any brother.”
So my fellow Creatives, as you go through this day, the rest of your week, and especially this time of the year that brings a different type of focus to our relationships, keep that simple thought in mind, He is our friend. He, Christ Jesus, is the truest Lover of our Souls and the God of All Comfort!
