“I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.” ~ANNE OF GREEN GABLES
There is something so magical and wonderful about the changing of seasons. For me, I especially love when Winter turns into Spring, or my absolute favorite when Summer puts on her comfy clothes and dresses up for Autumn or Fall.
Greens that have been scorched by the heat suddenly burst forth with a new vibrancy and dancy on the limbs of trees in fiery rays of ochres and reds. The scent in the air shifts to something sweet that smells of apples and smoke. The chill that kisses away the heat teases with a fresh effervescence.
The season of Harvest is upon us.
TREASURES IN THE TRANSITION
Harvesting one last time: As I have mentioned before, there is something grand that I love about this season. It’s a moment of pause, a time to pull up from our soil the last seeds planted and turn the soil once again in preparation for another season of sowing that will come in a new year.
Treasure: Find time to experience or execute that one thing you have been putting off all year long. And use this time as well, to create a plan for the coming year and season.
Communing with nature: This season is a great time to spend enjoying the bounties of God’s creation without the worry of pesky mosquitos or other bugs that seek after our exposed skin. Its time to go apple picking, to bake your first apple pie, to visit a pumpkin patch, or one of my favorites, go on a hayride.
There is just something so comforting and grounding about hearing wagon wheels rolling through mud puddles while chill air brushes against your cheeks.
Treasure: Allow yourself to breathe. Acknowledge not only the changes that are taking place around you on the outside but the beauty and opportunity of change that is happening on the inside. Give yourself margin and the time to fully enjoy and celebrate the glory in the change. Experience something new. Discover a different kind of beauty.
Communing with Others: This season is perfect for cozying up with family and friends. With the dipping of the temperatures comes the desire to find comfort indoors. But with this season comes great and hearty foods, like root vegetables, grains, and other lovely fruits that bless this season with hearty richness.
Treasure: Plan for a feast with friends that are based around the foods this season offers. Maybe try a new stew recipe. Learn to bake homemade bread. Explore the different spiced beverages that you can make at home, and make them with your loved ones. What greater treasure is there than having beautiful and comforting memories with those closest to you?
Bonus Treasure: Communicate your vision for the coming holidays, year, and decade with a group of trusted others. Having people to journey along with you from season to season is a powerful way to see your dreams made manifest. Sitting around with loved ones, be they family, friends, or both, sharing your vision and praying for each other, is a great way to enjoy and delight in the transition of seasons and treasure what you find.
With all transitions from one season to the next, there are great ways and opportunities to live beyond your boundaries and discover greater glory that you never knew existed. Take this time during these Autumn and Fall months and find the treasures that are waiting for you to take hold of.
