Change Your Mind: Choose Your Own Adventure pt 1

“…I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life…” ~DEUTERONOMY 30:19b

Remember back in the day when you were in elementary school and you got to go to the school library and pick out a few books to take home and read? Back when I was a child, that was one of the highlights of the week, going to the school library, and nothing brought more joy than getting my hands on the latest Choose Your Own Adventure novel.

Those books were fantastic in that within the limitations of maybe one-hundred and thirty or so pages of medium-sized print, seemed to be an infinite amount of unique stories that came to life simply by skipping from one section of the book to another.

Choose your own adventure. To see what happens if Sally falls in the well, skip to page sixty-four. To have Sally leap over the well to safety, go to page fifty-seven, to see what happens next from here, keep reading.

Some of these stories always had the same determined ending. Many of them had alternates. All of them left the telling of and experience of the story to the reader.

The same holds true for us and our faith-walks with Christ.

“The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” ~JOHN 10:10

Our Heavenly Father has penned for each of us, His Beloved Children, life stories of triumph and victory. But there is an enemy of our souls who has come with an eraser and a twisted narrative for our lives that he wants us to read and believe, rejecting what Christ has said.

Christ shows us what He has penned for us with an assurance of life, victory, hope, overcoming, power, peace, the list goes on. He promises you specific outcomes for your personal life revealed to you through Rhema Words, and revelations from prayer.

Your heart floods with joy. You write the promises down in your prayer journal…but then, here comes the enemy with lying symptoms that bring down your health. Your relationships seem to be crashing against the rocky shorelines of life. Your finances plummet as the job advancement you had hoped for is passed onto someone else.

But…even as your emotions seem to bring you down, and the lying whispers of the enemy repeat over and over how your God has failed you, somewhere deep inside you want to believe, even in the face of all that you are experiencing, that God is still able, and faithful, to perform all that He has promised.

We often think or allow ourselves to be convinced that when we come to these places within our faith-walks that the story has ended, our hope has been wasted, and we must start all over again.

But it is actually in these very moments that we get to choose our own adventure.

Do we turn our ears to what the enemy of our soul is saying, with the symptoms and circumstances, and feelings that press upon us? Do we steep in our emotions, no matter how valid they are, and allow them to dictate whose narrative for our life and destiny we are going to believe? Or do we, acknowledging how we feel, BUT continue to trust what the Lord has spoken to us despite all that we are facing?

Choosing the true narrative that Christ has penned for our individual lives begins with a choice and that choice is to embrace a repentant mind.

What is repentance? The Greek word, repentance, is Metanoia, and it literally means, “to change one’s mind.” It is to choose to conform and be transformed from one method of thinking, understanding, and belief, to another.

As the Lord said to the Children of Israel, He has given them a choice and He desires for them to choose life. We too, as the Righteous Redeemed of the Lord are called to make that choice every day as we walk with Him.

The first step in choosing Christ’s adventure for our lives is to choose to allow our minds not to be swayed by our circumstances. This isn’t easy by any stretch. Literally stretching of any muscle is never easy…at first. But once we get in the rhythm of doing so on a regular basis the act of doing so becomes fluid.

The best way to do this is to remind yourself, especially through the Word, of God’s love, His faithfulness, and His favor toward you.

The more we are reminded of these things, the more we become rooted in the truth, and the apter we are to stand against the lies. We are then equipped to continue to walk by faith in the path He has set for us. We, through His love, and choosing to believe that He loves us, are able to stay the course and expect what He has promised no matter what our circumstances say.

“For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.” ~II CORINTHIANS 4:17-18

Choose to change your mind. Choose not to be derailed. Choose to believe what Christ has said. That is the first step in choosing your adventure.

~Dream. Imagine. Believe. Do. CONQUER!
